LA und Umgebung - LA and surroundings

A town where everyone said, how ugly it is, when we talked about it. But see for yourself.

This is the one part of the Getty-Museum, the Getty-Center. The displayed art is alright. What was far more impressive is the way of displaying. You drive up in these tiny futuristic capsules, where you find these kind of architecture, where you can spend ours exploring and relaxing. Everything molds together in this harmonious general concept. And then you have a few pictures in there. Funny point: In this America, know for censorship of so many things you go through rooms full of naked boobs. Okay, its been some time that they where painted by romanticists and saloon painters, but its always funny to see, that the surrounding chance someones view so dramatic. Or why there are so many. Maybe private art has to somewhat more appeal in this direction, than state-run art. Didn't count and before you ask, didn't make pictures. You have to go there yourself. ;)

The Getty-Villa, the other part, is a recreation of a Italian Villa. Being rich just once. ;)

The other nice side of LA are those huge, broad, beautiful beaches. And the cycling path goes right through it.

Und ihr Humor!

And there humor!

Ob gewollt oder nicht. Pewpew, Naturschutz!

Unintended or not. Pewpew, Protectors of the Environment.

There are not many pictures of the other side of LA. LA might not be the big Moloch, but its a never ending small town, traversed by more Highways and streets than you could count and big infrastructures like this canal. On this part they changed it bike-friendly but in general it was loud, there where too many cars and its simply not a nice city.

These contrasts characterize also the surrounding towns. Whenever you find a little piece of paradise, beautiful beaches or marvelous architecture you turn around and see the opposite. Oil production facilities, run down infrastructure and towns...

Jealous. I want to surf, but so far, no luck.

Und zum Schluss: San Onofre. Genau.

And at the end: San Onofre. Exactly. The nuclear power plant, where I'm not granted access.

Vor LA - on the way to LA

A few impressions on the way to LA.

To make the street more even they dug trough the sandy coast hills. And the rain made some impressive art out of it.

Realistische Beschreibung fuer Radfahrer. Meine letzten richtigen Steigungen vor suedamerikanischen Bergbesteigungen.

The start of Big Sur. The elevation profile looked like a heart attack. Which is a pretty good description in more than one sense. My last real elevations before South America.

Meine misantrophische Seite.

My misanthropic side. On the other side you drop a 100 feet, before you hit the see.

Der hoechste Punkt. Naeher an den Wolken, als am Meer.

The highest point. Closer to heaven, than to the see.

One of those motives, that are so hard to capture by camera. The see shimmers red and blue. The ski shimmers red and blue. Everything is painted in those two colors. That reminds me of a painting my paps crafted with the same premise and the very same subject. Only that I was standing right in the middle of this impressionistic-surreal environment.

The Santa Barbara County Courthouse.According to the Wikipedia-article one of the most beautiful government buildings in the US. And what do they do? They build in a elevator. Official to a point where they put in a honorable mention regarding one of the persons who where responsible for conservating the building. Irony at its best.

Kein Kommentar. Keinen.

No comment. Only this much: There is not a single place that you cant reach by car in the US. Not a single one.

Amis Busse.

At the end one of the most impressive spectacle of nature I was able to witness. Here you see a big herd of 127 (yes, I counted) RVs that settled right next to the coast. Many have raised there flags to mark there territory and in nearly every one there is the reassuring humming of an engine, producing electricity and light, for the small houses and palaces. What it makes it so impressive? Germans dont build houses onto bus and truck chassis. We use cars. And sometimes tiny plastic boxes we call "Wohnwagen", that look like that: http://www.motor-talk.de/bilder/suche-kleinen-wohnwagen-rund-um-i-nd-aic-paf-g3367631/smart-qek-i202925472.html

Kraftwerke - Power plants - Plantas generadoras

Since the start of my trip I am officially a power plant engineer. I finished my bachelors thesis and with this I have my first degree. Its kind of a revelation, now that I think of it. But I forgot to get any presents, beeing busy with all the travel preparations ;) Nevertheless or thankfully still I am interested in power plants. On my trip Ive seen about half a dozen of these power plants.

Those are oil or gas power plants. If you want to know how they work, ask me when I have a paper and a pencil at hand.

Was ist auf diesem Bild, was da absolut hingehört?

Now a small riddle. What is on this picture, what should always be in locations like this?

Right, the titel of this entry kinda gives it away: A power plant. Between the beach, beach volley ball fields and beauties in bikinis (no pictures, sorry, I am a german gentleman) there is a power plant. I think I know where I want to work some day ;)

But american power plant engineers dont only have an easy life, if they have to write stuff like that on there billboards. What is the saying? Behind every warning is a story? On the other side they dont have to care about visitors. Its next to impossible to visit an american power plant, simply because the plants are considered vital points that come in question for a terroristic attack. No matter how likeable I am, so far no one let me in. :(

San Francisco

Der Herausforderer:
3 km lang - 70 Meter hoch - verdammt windig

The challenger:
3 km long - 70 meters high and damn windy

El contrincante:
3 km de largo- 70 metros de alto y maldita sea ventoso.

Geschafft!

Done!

Logrado!

A few impressions of this hilly city. Did I already say its pretty hilly?

Here you see a few pictures of good-food-town. In the third picture you see how I eat out. :)

Here a few last impressions from the so far most beautiful city in the US. Even my guide was wondering how the prospectors, outcasts and outlaws that came to the west coast built such a nice town. And that this is not always a given shows the rest of the US ;)

Nordkalifornien - North of California - Norte de California

Arcata and Ferndale
Arcata und Ferndale
Arcata y Ferndale

The north of California is actually pretty nice, even regarding the towns. Depending who where the first settlers you have a huge variety. Sometimes british, spanish and there is even a russian settlement.

Nature. Thats what I came for. Thats what I would came for again.

Naturaleza. Eso es lo que vine a ver. A eso volveré a venir.

Der Baum lehnt ueber die Strasse. Wenn der faellt ...

The tree is above the street. When this tree falls ...

I did something, what people will remember me for.
